The EU Nature Restoration Law is a historic opportunity to bring nature back to Europe. It is a key and unique opportunity to tackle the twin biodiversity and climate crises, while also creating numerous benefits for our health, economy, food security and overall well-being. Restoring our ecosystems adequately is more than ever mandatory.
HOS/BirdLife Greece is -once more- one of the 200 civil society organisations that have come together, in this joint statement, to call upon all EU Member States, Members of the European Parliament and the European Commission to ensure several key elements are included in the final text of the law, among them:
- All terrestrial and marine habitats are covered by quantified, time-bound and enforceable targets in and outside Natura 2000 areas.
- Restoration of agricultural ecosystems, complemented by dedicated targets for the restoration of drained peatlands.
- Ensure the law can enter into force immediately, without preconditions for the timely and steady implementation of the restoration target
- Dedicated and additional funding to finance restoration measures.
Large-scale nature restoration is urgently needed across our continent to reverse devastating biodiversity loss, maintain crucial benefits provided by nature (clean air and water, food, crop pollination) and make Europe more resilient to the impacts of climate change, such as severe droughts and floods.
Europe cannot afford to exploit and fail its nature any longer, and with this law, we can make one of the best investments - in nature.
Let's #RestoreNature, now!
