LIFE-IP 4 NATURA Project (2018-2025), the first LIFE Integrated Project ever approved for Greece, is the most important nature conservation project of the last decades for the country. It constitutes the first centrally coordinated initiative to implement the Greek Priortised Action Framework (PAF) on a national regional and local scale. The project’s objective is to substantially enhance Greece’s nature conservation framework in a way that ensures at the same time the country’s compliance with the European Union’s nature legislation. This is the reason that the project’s framework cohesively integrates actions covering all aspects of nature protection: policy, economy, society and science.
Twelve partners, coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and Energy, participate in the largest nature conservation project ever to be undertaken by the country and unite their forces to “shield” Greek nature, by creating new protection and management tools and promoting the opportunities arising from the harmonious coexistence between human and nature.
One of the most important actions of the Project is Action A.1 - Development and legal adoption of Action Plans (APs) for species and habitats of Community Interest and the subsequent Field implementation of the Action Plans (APs) for species and habitats through Action C.1.
Regarding birds, a Multi-species Action Plan (MsAP) for three threatened vulture species (Bearded vulture, Cinereous vulture, Griffon vulture) was developed and is being implemented within the framework of the Project. Hellenic Ornithological Society (HOS)/BirdLife Greece coordinates the implementation of the MsAP in collaboration with several public entities (Protected Area Management Units, Forestry Departments etc.), academic and research institutions, environmental organizations etc, with a wide range of individual actions ranging from population monitoring, management of threats such as poison baits use, deadly collisions with energy infrastructures, food insufficiency (by setting up a network of feeding stations), etc.
