The Pelican Way of LIFE Project “Conservation of the Dalmatian pelican along the Black-Sea Mediterranean Flyway” (LIFE18 NAT/NL/000716) brings together seven organizations from five countries to protect the endangered Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus) in Europe and internationally. The 5-year Project (09/2019 to 03/2025) is implemented in 27 Natura 2000 sites in Romania, Bulgaria, Greece and Ukraine, and will support actions in Turkey, Albania, Montenegro and the Republic of North Macedonia. In Greece, the actions of the Project are implemented by the Hellenic Ornithological Society.
Main actions in Greece:
- Monitoring of wintering and breeding success of the species in the Project’s areas
- Conducting annual national census of the species
- Risk assessment of energy transmission networks and installation of bird diverters
- Surveillance of colonies
- Awareness-raising, environmental education and ecotourism promotion activities. You can find the environmental education programme and the related material for the Dalmatian pelican here.
