The Hellenic Rarities Committee in its December 2nd, 2005 session decided, as there was an imminent need for renewal of Greece’s national checklist, to classify (according to international standards) species with the following order:
- Category A, species observed in wild state after 1/1/1950, includes 431 species.
- Category B, species observed in wild state during the period from 1800 to 1949, includes 4 species:
Black Francolin (Francolinus francolinus),
Houbara Bustard (Chlamydotis undulata),
White-eyed Gull (Larus leucopthalmus),
Pallas’s Sandgrouse (Syrrhaptes paradoxus).
- Category C, introduced or escaped from captivity species that have established viable breeding populations or birds originating from a Category C population of another country (and do not breed in the country), includes 1 species:
Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa).
For the following categories:
- Category D, any species not being genuine vagrant (Category A) or escaped from captivity (Category E) and
- Category E, escaped from captivity
The Committee has received and evaluated several registration forms; however species included in the aforementioned categories are not included in Greece’s national checklist (according to international standards).
