Since the foundation of the Hellenic Ornithological Society back in 1982, thousands of members and volunteers have been supporting its mission in various ways, significantly contributing to the common effort for the conservation of Greek nature.
On the occasion of the International Volunteer Day, HOS would like to thank all 400 active volunteers and also invite everyone interested in being a part of the HOS efforts for the conservation of birds and their biotopes across Greece.
More specifically, several HOS volunteers systematically monitor selected areas and record bird species inhabiting them, collecting data in order to take measures for the conservation of a threatened species, or an ecologically sensitive area (IBA Caretakers, Mid-Winter Waterbird Census etc.).
Moreover, our volunteers participate in projects for the conservation of the Lesser White-fronted Goose (Anser erythropus) and the Egyptian Vulture (Neophron Percnopterus) in Northern Greece, of the Lesser Kestrel (Falco naumanni) in Thessaly, in the safeguarding of the Eleonora’s Falcon (Falco eleonorae) colonies in the Aegean Sea islands, in public awareness campaigns such as that regarding the illegal hunting at the Ionian Islands etc. They also hold information booths, support public events and implement creative bird-themed workshops for children.
During our most recent volunteer action (photo), on Sunday 1 December, in cooperation with Tritsis Park Friends, we planted 90 young trees, discovered two hibernating tortoises and renewed our schedule for more volunteer actions!
