ISBN: 978-960-6861-31-4
The publication presents the analysis of the population data of all the waterfowl species (Anseriformes) and Eurasian coot (Fulica atra), wintering in Greece. It provides detailed analysis for 21 species, whereas for the remaining 11 rare species, brief information is given, as they have been scarcely recorded in the Midwinter Counts.
In addition, for each species, information is provided on the size of its population at regional level, its conservation status and the importance of Greece for the species. Finally, data are also provided, such as the annual variation of the species, average and maximum numbers, as well as distribution maps. The total period of the MABC 1968-2006 was divided into three sub-periods: 1968-1976, 1982-1996 and 1997-2006.
The present analysis is based on 19 wetlands which have not only been thoroughly monitored on a sufficient basis, but also hold the vast majority of the aforementioned species’ wintering populations in Greece. For each wetland a series of traits are provided, including coordinates, area, a brief description, mean and maximum numbers of birds counted, and the species for which the wetland is important at an international level. Information and data on annual changes in the populations of aquatic species are also provided.
